I have a dream. One day wolves will roam freely from the northern reaches of Yellowstone National Park up south and down into Jackson Hole in the American West. I believe they will fill vacant spaces that are seriously under-groomed. I believe they will play an important role in a natural balanced ecosystem, the way other animal predators do. In time, so I hope, they will be hunted and do not increase in numbers. For me, it is a dream about wolves.
But I dream about other wolves, too – the great gray spirits who dance in the bright mornings and who are yearning for their long lives. In enormous numbers, they lounge in the smell of the west wind that blows across the prairies of Yellowstone.
The wolves are now protected by law. They can be hunted again, and that should be allowed, to replenish their numbers. But they’re a danger to calves and kids of all kinds, so they should be put away from the herds and forced to live the long lives that they have always lived: in the wilderness.
Now, good animals die, but so do they that don’t know their future. Let us put them in large pens where they will live in peace, into their time, as they always have done in the wilderness. I would not willingly harm a wolf, and though I now know their ways, just as they know the subtle ways of the Northwoods, where they were born – I would never cage or hunt them. I only want them to stay in their country, if they do not like it, to live like wolves.
